The John Rylands Library Manchester
A major donation of work for this university library
The John Rylands University Library in Manchester houses 4 million printed books and manuscripts, thousands of electronic books and several hundred databases. It is one of the best-resourced academic libraries in the United Kingdom.
In January 2010, the newly refurbished ground floor foyer area of the library opened. The ultra modern design features a major twelve-piece work and a number of smaller paintings donated by Bob Brighton.
The principal donation is of the 'Maximal' series which was created during 1997. This comprises 12 paintings of acrylic on flax, each measuring 122 x 168 centimetres. The works have been expertly integrated into the new building, with some pieces encapsulated in purpose built metal and glass structures.
You can see a comprehensive set of photographs of the works at John Rylands taken by Tom Bradford in the gallery and also read Tom's review of the installation in the reviews section of this site.
